With the election here with us and parliament only months away to complete its term business, the civic groups need to equip urban slum dwellers with the right information so as to make sound voting choices in the forthcoming elections.
Urban slums have been faced by wrangles during elections as a result of manipulation by local politicians who mislead the jobless people for a small fee that has adverse effects on their lifestyles.
Due to the mixed tribes found in urban slums, political differences brought about by tribe backgrounds is set to take a center stage, and if not tamed by civic groups bloodshed, destruction of property and even economic effects maybe witnessed in the upcoming elections.
Media and film industry also needs to give the community more awareness on the role of the citizens in the effort to promote good governance,it is monotonous to always watch political campaign trails of leaders insulting each other in place of citizen education to spearhead growth in marginalized areas.
As leaders traverse across the ghettos in search of votes ,they never address the issues faced by the residents, i.e accessible healthcare, efficient disaster response services and even access to clean water, and rehabilitation of raw sewage which always finds its way in the ghettos from other posh estates.
Residents need to understand the role played by each leader in the respective positions so as they can always question them based on their performance and not the money they pour to the people who need more than money.
We need issue based leaders not sensational and filthy rich personalities!!!!!!
